Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson was rather “pissed” at the fact that he was seemingly the only champion on the roster who didn’t get a shiny new belt after each title defense.
Company president Dana White took note. After Johnson’s record-tying tenth consecutive title defense following his submission win over Wilson Reis at last night’s (Sat. April 15, 2017) UFC on FOX 24 event in Kansas City, Mo. (see it), White told Megan Olivi that while it isn’t exactly true that every champ gets a new belt after every defense, he will try his hardest to give “Mighty Mouse” nine more belts.
But, it won’t be an cheap thing to do (via MMA Junkie):
“I’m going to get him his belts. He’s definitely keeping the belt from tonight, and I guess I’ve got some catching up to do. Listen, that’s not the way it works. People don’t win belts every time. You defend your title, and you keep your belt. If we’re handing out belts every single defense here – that’s a lot of money. It would be a lot of money to get him eight more belts. To be honest with you, we don’t even have eight more belts. We order them as we do events. It’s going to be a little bit of back up on his belts, but we’ll get it done.”
Johnson is now one more win away from being in a category all his own, as one more title defense will ensure him his eleventh straight, surpassing “The Spider” once and for all.
