Reigning flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson looked to tie a UFC record and defend his title for a 10th-straight time last night (Sat., April 15, 2017) at UFC on FOX 24 live on FOX from inside Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, when he met hungry Brazilian contender Wilson Reis. The 125-pound king was coming off a unanimous decision victory over Tim Elliott back in December.
As usual, Johnson was incredibly elusive in Round 1. He was able to land early offense with head kicks, lead kicks and good counters by moving around the outside and picking his windows. Reis would land a slick takedown, but “Mighty Mouse” returned to his feet quicker than he left them. Johnson offered even more pressure in Round 2 by leaping in for right hands and spinning Reis’ head in all different directions. The Brazilian challenger landed a crisp left hand, but the champ made him pay tenfold before the second frame came to a close.
It was much of the same in Round 3. Johnson exploited the plodding Reis by pummeling his leg into his body. The Brazilian tried to cut off some corners, but “Mighty Mouse” was two steps ahead of him, landing a crucial takedown with minutes to spare. Johnson remained heavy in top control as the bloodied grappling expert looked for a way out. It wasn’t there. After Johnson battered Reis with some nasty hammer fists, the champion decided to submit the ground specialist with a perfected arm bar (full recap here).

Mighty Mouse ties Anderson Silva for ten straight title defenses. Chasing history! Congrats to the CHAMP. #AndStill pic.twitter.com/S9xnTSPmi3
With this win, Johnson ties Anderson Silva’s elusive record for consecutive UFC title defenses. At no point did Reis have Johnson in trouble and at no time did Johnson seem fazed by the chase for history. Moving forward, if “Mighty Mouse” decides to stay in the flyweight division, it’s possible that he pushes the record to 15.
