And Wilson Reis makes 10 ...
Dominant Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson looks to tie UFC’s record for title defenses this Saturday evening (April 15, 2017) when he headlines UFC on FOX 24 from Kansas City’s Sprint Center against the former EliteXC Bantamweight champion.
The earlier afternoon will see Rose Namajunas take on Michelle Waterson, “Jacare” Souza do battle with Robert Whittaker, and Jeremy Stephens duke it out with Renato “Moicano.”
UFC on FOX 24 is a pretty decent card, all things considered; therefore, let’s exploit it for all it’s worth.
What went wrong at UFC 210?
Practically nothing! In fact, we were one judge away from a perfect night. Daniel Cormier, Shane Burgos, Magomed Bibulatov and Patrick Cummins all delivered in spades, though I won’t deny that the first round of Cummins’ fight had my heart racing. More of that, please.
UFC on FOX 24 Odds For The Undercard:
Alexander Volkov (-145) vs. Roy Nelson (+105)
Tom Duquesnoy (-410) vs. Patrick Williams (+290)
Rashid Magomedov (-335) vs. Bobby Green (+245)
Tim Elliott (-300) vs. Louis Smolka (+220)
Devin Clark (-145) vs. Jake Collier (+105)
Andrew Sanchez (-315) vs. Anthony Smith (+235)
Aljamain Sterling (-245) vs. Augusto Mendes (+175)
Zak Cummings (-410) vs. Nathan Coy (+290)
Ashlee Evans-Smith (-180) vs. Ketlen Vieira (+149)
Thoughts: Louis Smolka is grievously overlooked here. Yes, he’s lost two straight while Elliott just finished giving “Mighty Mouse” hell, but look more closely: Elliott struggled in his last two bouts on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), has consistent issues with strong scramblers, and has difficulty making the cut to Flyweight. Smolka can roll for days and is an excellent opportunistic submission artist. And that doesn’t change just because he ran into a better version of himself in Ray Borg. Put a bit down on the Hawaiian and let’s see where it goes.
Aside from that glaring issue, you can squeeze some value out of Devin Clark and Ashlee Evans-Smith. Jake Collier is a mediocre 185 pounder moving up in weight against a stronger striker and wrestler. Evans-Smith, meanwhile, is a stronger wrestler than Vieira and the latter didn’t show much besides takedowns in her Octagon debut. Favorable style match ups mean good times for us.
UFC on FOX 24 Odds For The Main Card:
Demetrious Johnson (-850) vs. Wilson Reis (+575)
Rose Namajunas (-135) vs. Michelle Waterson (+115)
Ronaldo Souza (-230) vs. Robert Whittaker (+190)
Jeremy Stephens (-195) vs. Renato Moicano (+155)
Thoughts: “Jacare” is on a rampage. Whittaker is a great striker with solid wrestling, but so was Gegard Mousasi ... and Souza ran him over. He has power, but not even ludicrously brutal ground-and-pound from Yoel Romero was enough to put away the Brazilian. In other words, expect another submission win for Souza.
UFC on FOX 24 Best Bets:
- Single bet -- Louis Smolka: Bet $30 to make $66
- Single bet -- Devin Clark: Bet $72.50 to make $50
- Parlay-Ashlee Evans -- Smith and Ronaldo Souza: Bet $40 to make $49.20
It’s early enough in the afternoon not to ruin any plans and figures to produce quality entertainment of one kind or another — I’m excited. See you Saturday, Maniacs!
