Does Gegard Mousasi know something we don’t? Apparently he does. In fact, the rising middleweight title contender believes he knows exactly how Chris Weidman is going to fight at UFC 210 on April 8 from Buffalo, New York. To say the least, Mousasi’s confidence is arguably at an all-time high.
“I know how Chris Weidman’s going to fight,” said Mousasi during UFC 210’s conference call earlier this week (h/t MMA Junkie). “He’s going to come forward, he’s going to try to put the pressure on me, work on the cardio, do some wrestling, do some striking. But at the end of the day I’m prepared, I know exactly what he’s going to do, so I’m more than prepared. I got my skills, and I’m going to show it the 8th of April. I’m very confident, that’s all I can say.”
Mousasi should be this confident. After all, he’s the one who called out the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight king in the first place. If Mousasi didn’t maintain this type of demeanor before his biggest Octagon tilt to date then why is he here? As a matter of fact, Mousasi could benefit from a little more trash talking.
“I’m just speaking my mind,” added Mousasi. “I’m not acting. I’m not an actor. Some guys, they’re good at trash talking. They put on an act like WWE. But at the end of the day I’m just me, I’m just speaking my mind. I’m coming to fight.”
If Mousasi is able to get past Weidman in one week and lock down yet another meaningful top 10 victory, a title shot has to be on the horizon. But he’ll have to beat Weidman in his own backyard to do so.
UFC 210 will be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between current champion Daniel Cormier and top contender Anthony Johnson.
