UFC 209: Tony Ferguson gets paid $250k in ‘show money,’ Khabib Nurmagomedov loses out on $500K payday due to illness

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Dos Anjos vs Ferguson Etzel Espinosa-USA TODAY Sports

Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced out of his interim Lightweight title fight against Tony Ferguson the day of UFC 209 weigh-ins after “The Eagle” came down with an illness due to the weight cut down to 155 pounds (details here).

Not only did Khabib miss out on the opportunity to win his first-ever UFC title, he lost on the biggest payday of his UFC career, as he stood to bank $500,000 had he competed at the event.

Of course, prority number one is Khabib’s health.

Despite not getting the chance to face Nurmagomedov, Ferguson -- who did make weight -- was paid his show money by the promotion according to Dana White, to the tune of $250,000. With a win, he would’ve earned a cool half a million.

As for what the future holds for Khabib, Dana White isn’t too sure what’s going to happen.

“To be honest with you, Khabib fought in New York in November then here in this fight,” White said during the post-fight presser. “Two back-to-back weight cuts like that. I don’t know if he can make the weight or if he needs to get a better plan (or) dietician. Something,” said White.

“I don’t know. He got within six pounds and was in really rough shape. He’s going to have to take some time to recover from this weight cut, and then I don’t know what to do.”

Many feel the logical thing to do was to try and re-book the event for UFC 210, which is set to go down in April 8, 2017 in Buffalo, New York, but it seems neither White or Tony are too keen on the idea at the moment.

Can you blame them?
