It’s unfortunate that Tony Ferguson will be unable fight Khabib Nurmagomedov tomorrow night (Sat., Mar. 4, 2017) at UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada, after the undefeated Russian was pulled from the card. Ferguson was given the chance to take on short-notice replacement Michael Johnson, but “El Cucuy” didn’t want to take less money for a non-title fight. The streaking lightweight took some time to address fans at UFC 209’s ceremonial weigh ins earlier tonight.
“I thought it was a nightmare, man – something worse than ‘El Cucuy,'” said Ferguson. “It’s just some sh*t stuff you have to go through. This happens in the fight game.
“No disrespect to the UFC or Khabib. Everything happens for a reason. This is a fighters’ sport, so I want every single one of you to give love for the UFC and give love to Khabib, and I really want you guys to buy this pay-per-view – because the rest of the f**king card is amazing.”
To some surprise, Ferguson took the high road and wished Nurmagomedov luck after learning about his weigh-cutting issues. Now, he’s doing even more to stand out as a class act in promoting an event he’s no longer part of.
Only time will tell what UFC is going to do with Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, but the promotion has learned quickly during the course of these events that “El Cucuy” is undoubtedly a company man.
