It wasn’t exactly Nick Diaz-like, but Wanderlei Silva didn’t show up to today’s (March 28, 2017) press conference (video replay here) in New York City to promote his upcoming fight against Chael Sonnen, which is set for the Bellator 180 pay-per-view (PPV) event on June, 24, 2017 inside Madison Square Garden.
But that didn’t stop Sonnen and Silva from going at it, as “The Axe Murderer” was present via satellite, proceeding to engage in a back-and-forth verbal spat with “The American Gangster.”
“He just talks, all the time, just talks and talks and talks,” Silva said of Sonnen’s banter (recap here). “I hope you’re training more than you’re talking, because if you’re like you were in the last fight, man, I’m gonna beat you so fast.”
Of course, Silva is referring to Sonnen’s previous bout against Tito Ortiz, which he lost via rear-naked choke in the very first round at Bellator 170 earlier this year (see it again here). As for why Silva didn’t show, it’s simply because he’s too busy preparing for his fight against Sonnen.
“Because I’m training to beat somebody on June 24,” Silva said. “I’m focused on training back to 100 percent.”
The fight was originally set to go down under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) umbrella in 2014. Of course, a bevy of problems such as broken hands, failed drug tests and running from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), ultimately derailed the bout.
After Chael fired back by saying he couldn’t make out Silva’s “garble” and demanded Silva to call him “Mr. Sonnen,” the hard-hitting Brazilian ended his time on the mic and camera with an gesture to infer oral sex and telling Chael to “suck his balls.”
