After seeing his interim Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title fight opposite Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 209 fall apart in epic fashion, streaking contender Tony Ferguson has refocused all of his attention on current 155-pound king Conor McGregor. With his nine-fight win streak in tact, “El Cucuy” believes McGregor is the next logical step in his career. And even though McGregor has been largely linked to a superfight with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., that hasn’t stopped Ferguson from turning up the heat and bewildering “Notorious” in the public eye, recently posting the following via Twitter:
@TheNotoriousMMA Better Get That Cardio Right Son, Can't Run Forever #DefendOrVacate That Bitch Is Mine, Don't Trip Just Drop It & Walk Away
— Tony Ferguson (@TonyFergusonXT) March 23, 2017
While McGregor will most likely enjoy a massive payday opposite Mayweather sometime in 2017, he’ll have to encounter Ferguson inside of the Octagon at some point in time, assuming he’ll return to defend his lightweight title. Considering Nurmagomedov can’t be trusted to successfully cut weight or maintain his health outside of the cage, “El Cucuy” is the most readily available option for McGregor’s UFC return.
Of course, Nate Diaz or welterweight champion Tyron Woodley could easily swoop in and steal Ferguson’s bid.
