Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight king Mauricio Rua looked to make it three in a row last night (Sat., Mar. 11, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 106 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil, when he met New York native Gian Villante. It was easily Villante’s biggest promotional opportunity to date and one he would gladly want back.
In the first two rounds of the bout, ‘Shogun” was able to land the more meaningful strikes on a rather stationary Villante. Villante was able to crack the Brazilian with a few left hook counters, but his lead leg was beaten red after countless kicks. Battered and bruised, Villante didn’t last that long in the third and final frame, succumbing to a nasty left hook followed up by countless combinations along the cage. Villante would eventually fall via TKO.

With this win, “Shogun” yet again puts himself back into position to work towards contention in 2017. He may not possess the same level of dominance he did earlier in his career, but the Brazilian legend still packs a punch in a rather depleted light heavyweight faction.
