For better or worse, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is about to unveil a brand-new world title.
This Saturday evening (Feb. 11, 2017), former female boxing legend Holly Holm takes on Muay Thai mistress Germaine de Randamie in UFC 208's pay-per-view (PPV) main event, which takes place inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., for the promotion's inaugural women's Featherweight crown. In addition, Derek Brunson faces the legendary Anderson Silva and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza puts his Middleweight title run on the line against spoiler extraordinaire Tim Boetsch.
Now that the hangover has worn off, here’s how to recoup your losses from last Sunday.
What Went Wrong At UFC Fight Night 104?
Michinori Tanaka possessed and demonstrated the tools to beat Ricardo Ramos last weekend. He simply didn’t do enough, throwing almost no strikes and doing little to capitalize when his opponent began visibly wilting. He clearly has tremendous talent, but he’s too inconsistent for me to ever bet on again.
I honestly don’t know what to say about Alexa Grasso. That wasn’t the blue-chip prospect who tore through Invicta and ran roughshod over Heather Jo Clark in her Octagon debut. We saw what we could do when she let her hands go in the last minute; however, all we can do is hope she learns a valuable lesson from that mess.
UFC 208 Odds For The Undercard:
Randy Brown (-120) vs. Belal Muhammad (EVEN)
Wilson Reis (-600) vs. Yuta Sasaki (+450)
Islam Makhachev (-260) vs. Nik Lentz (+220)
Ian McCall (-110) vs. Jarred Brooks (-110)
Marcin Tybura (N/A) vs. Justin Willis (N/A)
Ryan LaFlare (-265) vs. Roan Carneiro (+225)
Rick Glenn (-200) vs. Phillipe Nover (+170)
Thoughts: Yeah, the fields aren’t exactly fertile this week. Let’s go with one gut pick and two safe ones to make up for it.
Betting on Muhammad honestly feels a bit like a sunk cost fallacy at this point, but the guy is just so much more proven than Brown on the world stage. Plus, Brown had all kinds of issues with the mediocre Erick Montano just last September. I have the same feeling with Muhammad that I did with James Vick last week, so let’s see if we can’t capitalize.
If Reis loses here, I’m going to start betting on the biggest underdog of each card every single time. There is simply no conceivable way -- barring the mighty hand of God personally coming down to smite him for ruining a parlay or something -- that he doesn’t wipe the floor with "Ulka." Bank on it.
Finally, LaFlare is worth a look. That's because Carneiro is firmly in that mid-tier that LaFlare has run roughshod over during his time in UFC, outmatched on the feet and lacking the submission threat off his back to neutralize LaFlare’s wrestling.
UFC 208 Odds For The Main Card:
Germaine de Randamie (-125) vs. Holly Holm (+105)
Derek Brunson (-135) vs. Anderson Silva (+115)
Ronaldo Souza (-500) vs. Tim Boetsch (+400)
Glover Teixeira (-165) vs. Jared Cannonier (+145)
Dustin Poirier (-475) vs. Jim Miller (+380)
Thoughts: You thought the undercard was empty of bargains? This is empty! That said, Teixeira is being grievously overlooked.
Yes, he got starched by Anthony Johnson last time out. You know who else gets starched by "Rumble?" Pretty much everyone he touches. Cannonier can hit, no doubt, but his ground game is leagues behind Teixeira’s and he has far less top-flight experience. Teixiera is a whole different animal than Ion Cutelaba, which Cannonier will learn in a hurry.
UFC 208 Best Bets:
- Single bet -- Belal Muhammad: Bet $30 to make $30
- Parlay -- Wilson Reis and Ryan LaFlare: Bet $66 to make $40
- Parlay -- Ryan LaFlare and Glover Teixeira: Bet $40 to make $48.40
