Sorry, Nashville.
Preliminary reports that an epic welterweight contenders scrap between Demian Maia and Jorge Masvidal would be held at UFC Fight Night 108 were misleading. Instead, MMA Junkie confirmed the match will go down at UFC 211 in Dallas on May 13th instead. And while that increasingly stacked card seems like the perfect place for such a magnificent fight, it guarantees the battle will only last three rounds, not five as some suspected when it was rumored for Nashville.
UFC 211 may be the most stacked card we've seen since UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden. It features two title fights: a heavyweight clash between Stipe Miocic and Junior dos Santos, and a women's strawweight title fight between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Andrade. Add in Fabrício Werdum vs. Ben Rothwell and now Maia vs. Masvidal, and you've got yourself a card in two and a half months that's coming together quite nicely, I'd say.
Of course, some might be upset that Demian Maia even has to fight at all. He was just the latest in a long line of fighters promised a title shot until suddenly they weren't. As the coundtown to the Tyrone Woodley vs. Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson fight at UFC 209 on March 4th ticked, he wrote that it would be foolish to accept a fight rather than wait, and that he really hoped Dana White kept his promise. Alas, all of a sudden he's in a fight, and not an easy one by any stretch of the imagination.
