Jorge Masvidal is on an incredible roll in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight division. After knocking out Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone in succession, “Gambred” has jumped all the way up to No. 6 in the ultra-competitive weight class. As Masvidal aims to make 2017 a year full of big wins and an eventual title shot, he’s ready and willing to welcome back a mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar to the UFC Octagon.
“Nick’s a different case, obviously,” said Masvidal to BJ Penn Radio when asked about a potential bout with former Strikeforce king Nick Diaz, who has returned from his suspension. “He’s super famous. He’s like a fight away from fighting for the title. He might go straight to the title. So that’s a different situation. He might not have a ranking, but his name carries a lot of weight, so if they put that fight together, I’d take it in a heartbeat obviously.”
Masvidal, 32, has been ridiculed in the past for not opening up early and going for finishes. That was until the former street fighter blasted “Juggernaut” and “Cowboy” will ferocious strikes to push his current win streak to three.
“I’m broke,” added Masvidal. “I need to f*ck somebody up ASAP. I got taxes, I got kids, I got mortgage payments. Somebody’s ass has to get whooped.”
If the promotion is willing to give Masvidal a shot at a returning Diaz it could do wonders for the former lightweight’s stock. Masvidal is known among hardcore fans of all shapes and sizes, but he’s just starting to catch on among casual viewers. A victory over Diaz, especially if it happens to be a finish (good luck), Masvidal would join a very short list of deserving title contenders.
