Top-ranked Heavyweight contenders Derrick Lewis and Travis Browne faced off tonight (Sun., Feb. 19, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 105: "Lewis vs. Browne," which took place inside Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, live on FOX Sports 1.
They had developed some beef headed into this one. Lewis was riding a five-fight win streak, and Browne represented his first elite-level test. For “Hapa” Browne, meanwhile, this was a chance to get back into the win column after two losses to divisional elite Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez.
Lewis immediately threw a right hand that Browne stepped back to avoid. “Hapa” landed a hard leg kick. Lewis threw a hard middle kick that cracked off the arms of Browne. Lewis hit a leg kick. Browne landed a teep and Lewis grabbed his midsection in pain, but when Browne tried to step in Lewis backs him off with an overhand attempt. Browne focused on piecing up Lewis with kicks. Lewis was holding his midsection for a full minute. He tried a spinning wheel kick, then a jumping switch kick. Lewis dropped Browne with a rear straight as Browne threw a leg kick. Browne buckled Lewis with another body shot, a knee this time, but the big man fought his way back to his feet. He ate several leg kicks from Browne, then whiffed a right hand. He tried another wheel kick, then hit a nice right hand as the round ended. Travis nodded in acknowledgment and grinned before walking to his corner.
Travis went back to his front kick to the body at the beginning of round two. Lewis looked for a hard left-right combination that missed. Browne landed a high kick, but Lewis grabbed the clinch and connected on a hook inside, hurting Browne. Lewis began unloading hard shots as Travis shelled up against the cage. He grabbed the clinch, but ended up on bottom after a takedown attempt, and Lewis showed immense strength to shuck him back to the canvas. Lewis was in full mount for a second and began to land hard ground-and-pound. Browne fought his way back to his feet, but as he looked to throw his right, Lewis sent him down hard with his own right fist. Browne was very hurt and referee Mario Yamasaki took far too long to step in.
What a fight. Lewis said in the post-fight interview that he wasn’t hurting from the kick, he just had to do “number 2.” He didn’t hold back at all, going in on Travis Browne:
"I just knew I had a bigger heart than him. He calls himself a man, but he likes to put his hands on women. So, forget that guy -- I have much more heart than he has. Where's Ronda Rousey's fine ass at?"
He said he wants some time off, and doesn’t want to hear about another fight for the next three months. According to Lewis, with all the fights and the sex he has been getting, his body is tired.
Official results: Derrick Lewis def. Travis Browne by KO at 3:12 of round two
