No homo (phobe): Fabricio Werdum clarifies gay joke after rekindling ‘Cigano’ feud

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight titleholder Fabricio Werdum, against the advice of the late-Michael Jackson, wanted longtime rival and fellow ex-champ Junior dos Santos to come out of the closet.

Because, in the opinion of “Vai Cavalo” (read it here), the Brazilian’s obsession with him was indicative of man-love to the highest degree. Then again, Werdum did some calling out of his own (sample).

His explanation to MMA Junkie:

“I gave the (interim title) idea because ‘Cigano’ was saying a lot, and I couldn’t understand why he targeted me. Usually the target is the champion. That’s always the goal. So I didn’t understand why he was talking about me before the fight even happened. That’s why I joked – everyone knows that ‘Cigano’ is not gay, obviously, and I don’t have anything against gay people. But I joked that he needed to come out of the closet because he didn’t stop talking about me. If I were the champ, I’d understand it, but since I wasn’t, I couldn’t. So I challenged him. I told him that if Miocic didn’t fight because of his contract issues, I suggested an interim title fight with ‘Cigano.'”

The promotion appears to have other plans, though neither fighter is currently booked to throw down.

Werdum (21-6, 1 NC), ranked No. 1 and Dos Santos (18-4), currently sitting at No. 4, first went to war at UFC 90 back in 2008. It was expected that these two would run it back at some point in their respective careers but alas, fate has kept them apart.

For how much longer, remains to be seen.
