Former heavyweight Jared Cannonier looked to continue his winning ways at light heavyweight last night (Sat., Feb. 11, 2017) at UFC 208 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, when he took on former title challenger Glover Teixeira. It was by far Cannonier’s biggest test to date and ultimately the first time we’ve seen Teixeira come back after a knockout defeat, having lost to Anthony Johnson back in August.
Despite possessing devilish power in each one of his hands, Teixeira came out early with a single-leg takedown. He then moved into position and nearly ended the fight with a tight guillotine choke, but “Killa Gorilla” defended well and shook it off. Once he got back to his feet, Cannonier landed a solid combination along the cage that temporarily wobbled Teixeira. In Round 2, Teixeira went back to the ground and pressured the Alaskan front top control to limit his offensive options. Cannonier succumbed to another takedown early into the final frame and struggled to regain his composure from there. Teixeira walks away with the dominant unanimous decision win.

With this win, Teixeira saves some face after his 2016 loss to “Rumble.” But against an unproven heavyweight defector like Cannonier, the Brazilian needed to produce a memorable finish. He did not. And for that, Teixeira will struggle to work his way back into title contention in a quick and fashionable manner.
