Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s bantamweight queen Holly Holm made her bid for a second title last night (Sat., Feb. 11, 2017) at UFC 208 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, when she met Germaine de Randamie for the inaugural women’s featherweight crown. Holm was looking to shake off a two-fight losing streak, while de Randamie was trying to make a name for herself on the biggest stage of her career.

In a battle of equally-skilled strikers, it was de Randamie who came out a little more patient. Holm was certainly more active, jumping in and out of her strikes, but “Iron Lady” picked her shots well and landed more damage early. To close the distance, Holm did attempt a takedown to end the first round, but de Randamie defended nicely. In Round 2, de Randamie continued to sit on her punches and waited for “The Preacher’s Daughter” to enter, landing heavy counters as Holm exited. Unfortunately for Holm, de Randamie landed a vicious right hand after the bell that rocked Holm and sent her wobbling back to her corner, but no point was deducted.

Holm seemed to recover before the start of Round 3, as she pressed forward with combinations, oblique kicks and leg kicks. But de Randamie stood her ground, offering crisp counter shots along the cage and defending yet another takedown attempt by the former champ. With seconds remaining in the round, Holm landed a spectacular question mark kick that stunned de Randamie. In response, de Randamie got back to her feet and started to unload on Holm as the bell sounded, but yet again the referee failed to penalize “Iron Lady” for the late offense.

Knowing that de Randamie has never seen championship rounds before, Holm pushed her against the cage in the beginning of the fourth and controlled the action. Holm caught de Randamie with a flush right hand and a kick to the body before pinning her against the cage yet again with minute remaining. De Randamie scored some solid knees in the clinch to loosen Holm’s control. In Round 5, Holm was able to find a home for a vicious left hand that stunned de Randamie and sent her into retreat. From there, Holm would once again control the action the cage and force de Randamie to exhaust more energy. In the end, through five tough rounds, de Randamie earned the unanimous decision win.

With this win, de Randamie better get ready to defend her new title against the almighty Cris Cyborg. “Iron Lady” narrowly defeated Holm in a fight that she could have been deducted a few points for some late shots, so she must work out the kinks if she wants to remain champion in 2017.
