Kevin Lee shares what he's heard about Conor McGregor's UFC return - ‘Something crazy is going to happen’

The interim lightweight challenger shares his thoughts on a McGregor vs. Ferguson fight and when it may go down.

MMA: UFC 216-Ferguson vs Lee Joshua Dahl-USA TODAY Sports

Even though he lost his interim lightweight title fight against Tony Ferguson back in October at UFC 216, you've got to say it's been a great year for Kevin Lee.

One year ago, no one was even talking about Lee as a contender for the belt. But a win over Francisco Trinaldo and some compelling smack talk with Michael Chiesa followed by a first round win propelled him to the very top of the pack.

Lee shared the view from the top of the division with MMA Junkie Radio, which included what he's heard about lightweight champion Conor McGregor's much anticipated return to the UFC, most likely against interim champ Tony Ferguson.

"Either that, or something crazy is going to happen there," Lee said (probably in reference to all that Mayweather business). "But, at least I think everything that I’ve seen and all the little whispers that I’ve heard, he comes back, he fights Tony.”

Having been on the wrong side of Tony Ferguson's fists, Kevin Lee doesn't believe McGregor makes it past him.

"I don’t think he beats Tony," Lee said. "There ain’t no way. Tony’s going to be way too experienced, Tony’s going to be way too tough… He’s going to be too much for him. So I’m interested to see that fight. I wish they would just go ahead and make the damn fight happen already. I hear it’s supposed to go down in March, so we’ll see."

A March date lines up with what McGregor's coaching team has let slip in the past, but when you've got a hundred million dollars in your bank account, who knows what's going to happen next for sure?

We'll definitely be keeping our eyes on the big surprise press conference allegedly going down this Friday leading up to UFC 219. Maybe a McGregor vs. Ferguson fight for St. Patrick's will be announced?
