Chuck Liddell's much rumored comeback is dead.
That's according to Chael Sonnen, who was widely considered to be the most likely opponent for "The Iceman" if he ended up in Bellator. Sonnen opened up on the briefly hot potential match-up during a media luncheon for Bellator's upcoming heavyweight tournament, which features a match-up between the formerly lightweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and oft-time middleweight Sonnen.
"I thought that Chuck was coming back," Chael said (via MMA Fighting). "I had good reason to believe that. He lost his job. He said he wanted to come back, then he went into the gym. This was my evidence. But I had these three pieces of evidence. He played along a little bit, he looked like I foreshadowed it correctly. But sure enough, he’s not coming back. It was just some talk. So, I let it go.”
But of course Chael is never going to quite let a money fight like this go. So his declaration that the Liddell fight was off came with a few solid jabs that just might be enough to re-ignite Liddell's interest.
"What I think, regardless of the way I tell the story, I think that Chuck is probably a pretty good guy," Chael said. "He’s gotta walk around with that haircut, looks like he lost a bet. That can’t be easy to do."
"It’s not easy to be Chuck,” he continued. “You’re broke, you snorted all your money away. It’s not an easy to life. I don’t need me to kick him while he’s down, either. If he wanted to come back, we could agree to a match and then maybe things would be different. But I think in this setting, I wish him well.”
You gotta hand it to Chael, that's some A++ trolling right there. Kenny Florian got it right when he said Colby Covington is no Chael Sonnen, and it's even more evident here when we get to bask in some primo Sonnen smack.
Sonnen vs. "Rampage" takes place at Bellator 192 on January 20, so we've got a whole lot more to look forward to. Maybe Covington can take notes.
