Misha Cirkunov and Glover Teixeira got the UFC on FOX 26 main card kicked off in a Light Heavyweight showdown tonight (Sat., Dec. 16, 2017) inside Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Teixeira had just been beaten by Alexander Gustafsson, while Cirkunov had had his lights turned off by Volkan Oezdemir. This was an important fight for both men in a paper-thin 205-pound division.
Cirkunov opened up taking the center of the Octagon, jabbing at Teixeira. Cirkunov landed a heavy body kick. Glover stepped into range with a straight to the body. Cirkunov kept his jab in Glover’s face and landed an intercepting knee as Teixeira came in. Cirkunov stepped forward and unloaded with a long combination that had Teixeira against the cage. He was lighting up T a little but but Teixeira grabbed double underhooks in the clinch and tripped Cirkunov to the mat. Cirkunov based out but Glover took his back. He nearly had a rear-naked choke. Cirkunov rolled over, escaping the choke, but Teixeira had him flattened out, belly-down, and started landing heavy hooks to the side of Cirkunov’s head. Misha wasn’t moving, and the referee stepped in! Glover Teixeira survived some bad spots in the striking to get a decisive win there.
Glover says “at my age, everybody doubt you.” He said he saw Cirkunov getting too excited, trying to rush in. He said Daniel Cormier had said in the locker room if he won in spectacular fashion, he would get him a title shot, and though he knows it “isn’t up to us,” he challenged Cormier to throw down in the middle of the Octagon with him, old-school.
Official result: Glover Teixeira def. Misha Cirkunov via technical knockout at 2:45 of round one
