Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White held Conor McGregor’s leash when “Notorious” crossed over to the “sweet science” and made a shitload of money by doing the job for Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Because “The Money Fight” was a box office success, White is now convinced he can successfully promote boxing under the UFC umbrella (details). Sure, the last time he tried something along those lines he crashed and burned, but this time is different!
For all the wrong reasons, according to longtime promoter Bob Arum.
“Who gives a shit about White, he’s a piece of crap,” Arum told reporters on Saturday night after the Vasyl Lomachenko-Guillermo Rigondeaux fight in New York City (transcribed by Bloody Elbow). “It’s an acknowledgment how strong boxing is. He has the UFC that’s cratering, and he needs boxing to save himself.”
Can’t imagine why Arum would be so pessimistic.
There is no timetable for White’s venture into boxing and there is still plenty of matters at home to attend to, including but not limited to his expired television deal with FOX and its corresponding networks.
There’s also no word on how White plans to carve out space in the “sweet science” without the big names of Mayweather or McGregor, especially when you consider how many of the marquee headliners are already locked up by the douchebags at Top Rank and the cokeheads at Golden Boy.
Time will tell.
