Bellator MMA has already assembled its starting line up for the 2018 grand prix (see it), but as with any tournament, alternates are needed in case advancing fighters are injured or otherwise unfit to compete.

Enter Shane Carwin.

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim heavyweight champion Emailed Bellator matchmaker Rich Chou to throw his name into the proverbial hat, according to a recent post on social media.

“I sent Bellator MMA a request to get on as an alternate for this amazing tournament,” Carwin wrote on Facebook. “I really can't wait to watch it either way but I am so pumped up for it I had to get my name on a list. I'd love a real title.”

Carwin (12-2) hung up the gloves back in 2011 on the heels of his unanimous decision loss to Junior dos Santos, his second straight after coming up short to Brock Lesnar in his first-ever UFC title fight.

While his RIZIN debut never materialized, the 42-year-old Carwin may finally get a crack at that dream opponent.
