Jorge Masvidal says ‘crazy’ Colby Covington will ‘do whatever he wants’

At this rate, UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington will become Public Enemy No. 1 in Brazil by the end of the year.

Not only has the brash Californian called the South American country a dump, but he recently got into an Australian boomerang fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, resulting in assault charges for the Brazilian. In addition to his ongoing feud with Brazil, Covington has surprisingly created beef with former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, telling “Bones” to do “more coke” and go “cheat on his wife.”

For better or worse, Covington is beginning to grab headlines in the mixed martial arts (MMA) spectrum. Covington’s antics have been unorthodox to say the least, but still the overall effort expected by teammate and fellow UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal.

“Colby’s Colby. That’s my partner,” said Masvidal to MMAjunkie earlier this week while guest speaking at UFC Fight Night 121 in Australia. “He’s going to do whatever he wants. He’s not going to definitely listen to me. He’s crazy.”

Masvidal also acknowledged Covington’s recent altercation with Werdum and was glad he wasn’t there to get involved.

“It’s crazy, because I don’t want to be starting more bad press for my sport and getting fines,” Masvidal said. “So, in a way, I’m glad that (I wasn’t there). I don’t want to be part of the chaos. I’m not going to run from it. If there’s a fight, and somebody’s picking it with me, well, that’s what I love to do. So, f*ck it. Might have to do a free one here and there.

“But I don’t want to, though. I don’t want to get in trouble. I don’t want no extra negative media on me.”

While Masvidal has had his own public spats with fellow UFC veterans, the more collected American Top Team member accepts the fact that Covington might just be a little more mad.

“He’s on a different vibe. He’s got different plans,” Masvidal said. “I don’t tell him what to do when it comes to that type of stuff. He’ll listen to me, but at the end of the day, that dude’s crazy. He’s going to do whatever he wants to do.”
