UFC Fight Night 120 results: Next matches to make for ‘Poirier vs Pettis’ main card winners

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to the hurt business last night (Sat., Nov. 11, 2017) for UFC Fight Night 120, which took place inside Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia. The Fox Sports 1 event featured a Lightweight bout that saw Dustin Poirier and Anthony Pettis put on a blood way which ended in “Showtime” tapping to an apparent injury, giving Dustin the win (see it again here).

In the co-main event, Matt Brown absolutely annihilated Diego Sanchez with a vicious elbow in the very first round to put a bow on his MMA career (see it again here).

Who He Should Fight Next: Alvarez vs Gaethje winner

In what proved to be an entertaining, back-and-forth bloody war, Poirier earned a massive win over the former Lightweight champion of the world after Pettis tapped in the third and final round from what seemed to be a busted up rib cage. Nevertheless, prior to his callout, I had Poirier lined up to face the winner of the upcoming bout between Eddie Alvarez and Justin Gaethje at UFC 218. And since “The Diamond” wants it, too, I don’t see why UFC matchmakers wouldn’t oblige. It would give Poirier a chance to re-do the dance with Alvarez, or face a “Highlight”-making machine in Gaethje. Either way, it’s a good time all around.

Who He Should Fight Next: Kryzysztof Jotko

Cezar has been trying his hardest to break into the top 15. And after taking out Nate Marquardt last night in Norfolk, he’s getting closer. A matchup — and more importantly a win — over Jotko can basically get him there. Jotko has dropped his previous two outings, but he is still hanging on to the No. 13 ranking at Middleweight. A win over Ferreira can not only get him back on track, but assure his spot among the best middleweights in the world. For Cezar, taking out a ranked opponent more than likely assures him taking his spot.

Winner: Andrei Arlovski

Who He Should Fight Next: Stefan Struve

Arlovksi finally got back on the winning track, breaking his five-fight losing streak by outlasting Junior Albini in Virginia in a hard-fought battle. Despite getting back inot the winners circle, don’t expect for “The Pitbull” to start taking on the cream of the crop so soon. That’s going to take some time. Until then, I’d like to see him face off against Struve, he came up short against Alexander Volkov in his last fight. There aren’t a whole lot of other options that make sense for either man, and the fight would make for a fresh one, as they have yet to face one another.

Winner: Raphael Assuncao

Who He Should Fight Next: John Lineker

Both Raphael and Lineker proved victorious in their previous bouts against Mathew Lopez and Marlon Vera, respectively, and both of their previous losses came to the current champion, T.J. Dillashaw. And since they are ranked at No. 4 (Assuncao) and No. 5 (Lineker) matching them up against one another makes sense. The win won’t necessarily get them a title shot, but could set them up for a No. 1 contenders bout, which will likely get them closer to a rematch against “The Viper.”

Who He Should Fight Next: Francisco Trinaldo

Guida has looked great since moving back up to Lightweight, winning two in a row including his latest victory, a first round technical knockout victory over Joe Lauzon in what was his 25th fights inside the Octagon (see it again here). Still, “The Carpenter” has to put a bit more work in if he wants to crack the top 15, as the division is stacked with contenders. That said, it only makes sense to have him take on the No. 15 ranked fighter in Francisco Trinaldo. The Brazilian bomber got back on the winning track just a few weeks ago by taking out Jim Miller. Both Francisco and Clay like to bang, so the bout will definitely deliver in that area and allow each man to raise his stock in a very crowded division.
