UFC 216: Dana White says Conor McGregor vs. Tony Ferguson ‘needs to happen next,’ not Nate Diaz trilogy fight

Dana White made it very clear what he wants to happen next with Conor McGregor, as he took to the post-fight press conference (video replay) last night (Sat., Oct. 7, 2017) in Las Vegas, Nevada to shoot down any rumors of a Nate Diaz trilogy fight while giving Tony Ferguson a boost of confidence.

“Nobody’s talked about Diaz. Diaz has never been talked about. That’s internet bullshit,” White said via MMA Fighting.

“Tony’s the interim champion, Conor’s the champion, that’s the fight that makes sense. It’s the fight that has to happen, it doesn’t ‘make sense,’ it’s the fight that has to happen.”

Ferguson claimed the interim title by submitting Kevin Lee in the main event of UFC 216 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Afterward, “El Cucuy” took to the mic to call out Conor, telling him to either defend the title or vacate the premises.

As for White, though he didn’t have a concrete return date for “Notorious,” he gets the feeling the fiery Irishman wants to return this year.

“Not yet. We didn’t specifically talk about it, but yeah we talked about it kinda,” White said. “He wants to fight again this year. He does want to fight again this year so he went and partied in Ibiza for a while, went back home for awhile, you gotta let him blow off some steam and then figure it out.”

It’s good to be box office king.

As for a potential title unification bout with Ferguson, White says there is no way it doesn’t live up to the billing, saying “El Cucuy’s” style matched with Conor’s has all the makings of a barn burner.

“Tony’s a busy guy,” White said. “He keeps coming forward, he keeps throwing all kinds of different things at ya. And Conor’s awesome. There’s no way that’s not a great fight. Impossible.”

Of course, all eyes are on McGregor, as the mixed martial arts (MMA) world waits to see his reaction to Tony’s win and perhaps a decision as to what he will do next. One things is certain, though, is that Diaz may have hurt his chances of a trilogy fight with this.
