UFC 216 results: Biggest winners, loser from ‘Ferguson vs. Lee’ last night

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action for UFC 216: “Ferguson vs. Lee,” which went down last night (Oct. 7, 2017) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The promotion's latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by an interim Lightweight title fight that saw Tony Ferguson claim his first-ever UFC world title by submitting Kevin Lee in the third round. In the co-main event, Demetrious Johnson made history by scoring his eleventh straight title defense with an amazing submission win over Ray Borg.

Biggest winner: Demetrious Johnson

“Mighty Mouse” is now on a mountain all his own, as he no longer shares the title defense record with Anderson Silva after submitting Borg in the co-headlining act. And he earned style points, too, as he pulled off one of the most amazing submissions in the history of the sport, suplexing his foe all while catching him in the submission mid-air. Though Borg tried his hardest to fight it off, he had no other choice but to tap to avoid a snap. Johnson can now sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labor after his record-setting night. And though he will likely defend his belt a couple more times (more if he wants to), expect him to start making his jump up to Bantamweight soon thereafter.

Runner Up: Tony Ferguson

“El Cucuy” talked the talk and he definitely walked the walk after he decimated Kevin Lee to claim the interim Lightweight strap, ultimately submitting him with a triangle choke. After beating just about everyone he needed to in order to get to the pinnacle of the sport, Ferguson has his sights on a title-unification match against division king, Conor McGregor. The problem is, “Notorious” still marches to the beat of his own drum, and if doesn’t want to defend his strap, history has shown the promotion won’t force him to, instead allowing him to pick his next foe. Hopefully, Conor sticks to his word of wanting to legitimize the belt, because a showdown against Ferguson would be something to behold.

Biggest Loser: Magomed Bibulatov

Some may think that’s a bizarre choice, but Lee and Borg gave it all they had in their first-ever title fights, so calling them “biggest losers” doesn’t seem appropriate. Magomed, though, was coming in as the next top prospect at Flyweight, coming in undefeated at 14-0. Even Demetrious Johnson mentioned Magomed as a future fight for him at 125 pounds earlier in the week. Moraga, though, had plans of his own, knocking out Bibulatov in the very first round rather viciously. While John can use this momentum to push him forward to one day earn another shot at the strap, it’s back to square one for Magomed, the Chechen fighter who was one of Ramzan Kadyrov's greatest fighters representing his Fight Club Akhmat.
