A lot of folks in the mixed martial arts (MMA) community were happy to hear that former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight No. 1 contender, Anthony Johnson, was coming out of retirement.
Longtime rival Daniel Cormier isn’t one of them.
That’s because “DC” believes “Rumble” only retired because he was butthurt over losing at UFC 210, which is why Johnson is abandoning the 205-pound division and coming back to the Octagon as a heavyweight.
From his Talk & Talker podcast (via MMA Fighting):
“There’s something that’s kind of bothering me right now and it’s news that Anthony Johnson is coming out of retirement. I feel like if he was going to retire maybe he should have stayed retired a little bit longer because when you do that, you come back this quick, it just kind of feels like ‘Oh you were mad because you lost, so you just quit’. Right? It’s not even a six-month retirement. So it feels kind of like you were mad because you lost, and you kind of just quit. That’s not the way things are supposed to be, you know?”
Fake retirements are all the rage these days.
Johnson’s only two losses since making his UFC return in 2014 have come against Cormier and both were by way of submission (rear-naked choke). That kept “Rumble” from his long-desired showdown against former division kingpin Jon Jones.
Which now seems virtually impossible (because of this).
Cormier is once against light heavyweight champion and will likely move on to collide with top contender Volkan Oezdemir later this year, though Alexander Gustafsson is undoubtedly nipping at his heels.
High drama at 205, as usual.
