It was not your typical Demian Maia contest last night (Sat., Oct. 28, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 119 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as the ageless submission specialist was bullied and bloodied by brash welterweight contender Colby Covington.
After talking a ton of trash before their co-main event showdown, Covington truly backed it up when he got his hands on Maia. “Chaos” pressured the Brazilian legend at every possible turn, and warded off all takedown advancements from his desperate counterpart. Maia engaged in way more standup exchanges than anyone would have though, but he was getting beat by Covington in all aspects of the fight.
In the end, despite a nasty cut above his right eye, Covington escaped UFC Fight Night 119 with a powerful unanimous decision win. One judge even awarded him a 30-26 score (remember, the fight was in Brazil).

With this performance, Covington extends his current win streak to five. The confident 29-year-old is making strides at 170 pounds and is beginning to physically break down some of the division’s most durable veterans. Nobody has punished Maia in this fashion before at the welterweight level, so it’s an important step in Covington’s ongoing title hunt.
