Plans for Amanda Nunes vs. Raquel Pennington at UFC 219 scrapped over car accident

A leg injury suffered in a car accident will prevent Pennington from competing for the women’s bantamweight title on December 30th.

UFC 219 on December 30th is looking pretty stacked, but it's still lacking a main event to cap things off. While some are still holding out hope that Conor McGregor might make a quick turnaround to face Tony Ferguson at the event, it's starting to seem like a long shot. And now we're learning that another main event the UFC was looking at can't happen either.

According to Combate, the UFC was planning to have women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes face off against Raquel Pennington. Unfortunately, Pennington reportedly just suffered a car accident in Colorado on October 25th and suffered a leg injury that will keep her from accepting the fight.

That doesn't leave many topped ranked 135 pounders for Nunes to face. She just defeated #1 ranked Valentina Shevchenko in a ho-hum affair, and the UFC is currently trying to get #2 Holly Holm to face Cris Cyborg at 145 pounds. #3 ranked Julianna Pena is pregnant and #4 Pennington we've already talked about. #5 Rousey is as good as retired and #6 Cat Zingano has only fought once since 2015.

The UFC may have to get creative if they want to put together a title fight for Nunes that'll attract some positive fan attention. Here's the rest of UFC 219 as it stands.

  • Dominick Cruz vs. Jimmie Rivera
  • Louis Smolka vs. Matheus Nicolau Pereira
  • Carlos Condit vs. Neil Magny
  • Gokhan Saki vs. Khalil Rountree
  • Myles Jury vs. Rick Glenn
  • Marc Diakiese vs. Daniel Hooker
