Monday Morning Hangover: What’s next for Cowboy Cerrone after suffering third straight loss at UFC Gdansk?

Another weekend of fisticuffs has come and gone, as UFC Fight Night 118 blew the roof off Ergo Arena this past weekend (Sat. Oct. 21, 2017) in Gdansk, Poland.

Plenty of fighters were left licking their wounds, including Jodie Esquibel, who got a rude welcome into the Octagon by Karolina Kowalkiewicz, losing her Octagon debut via unanimous decision. And Artem Lobov, who suffered another loss inside the cage courtesy of Andre Fili.

But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now two days removed from the show?

Donald Cerrone.

Going into his headlining bout against Darren Till, “Cowboy” was riding a two-fight skid, something the longtime veteran had never experienced. Unfortunately for Cerrone, it got worse, before it got better, as he left Ergo Arena the owner of a three-fight losing streak.

Till took it to Cerrone from the onset, swarming “Cowboy” at every turn before ultimately landing a beautiful combination the floored the longtime veteran, and which lead to his demise following a few more well-placed blows (see it again here).

As predicted.

While the future looks bright for Till, things are looking rather blurry for Cerrone, as losing three in a row usually leaves anybody scratching his or her head, pondering their future.

Just ask this guy.

Granted, Cerrone’s losses have come against some of the very best, as losing to Jorge Masvidal and Robbie Lawler is nothing to hang your head low over, but, at the end of the day, when the defeats start adding up, it doesn’t matter who they came against.

Where it’s gone wrong for Donald is unclear, as he started his run at Welterweight scorching hot, winning four in a row, all finishes, against some rather stiff opposition.

When a fighter starts losing so many consecutive fights, retirement is something that is always tossed around. But, Cerrone isn’t there yet in my opinion. I firmly believe the standup specialist has a lot left in the tank and plenty left to offer the fight game.

“Cowboy” is still only 34 years of age, and one bob here, one weave there, and the former WEC standout could very well be on a win streak. There are plenty of fights out there for Cerrone to take part in. Will he ever vie for another shot at the title? Not based on his current skid he won’t.

As frequently as he fights, he could easily rack up he wins and get himself back into contention. But that’s neither here, nor there at the moment, as Cerrone was never about the title anyway.

He just wants to scrap, and scrap he will regardless if he decides to go back down to Lightweight or continue to swing leather at 170 pounds. Personally, I’d like to see him stay at Welterweight to take on Gunnar Nelson next.

“Gunni” was knocked out by Santiago Ponzinibbio in his last outing, so he is in desperate need of a win, too. It’s a clash of styles, but not all bouts are going to be standup wars.
