I know a lot of folks felt bad for Mike Goldberg when he was fired from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), but if “Goldie” was still doing his mixed martial arts (MMA) play-by-play alongside balding buddy Joe Rogan, he would have never made it to Japan to watch giant robots destroy each other in the name of nationalism.
In the spirit of Mech Warrior, Robot Jox, and all those other “giant machines with men inside trying to kill each other” fantasies, founders Gui Cavalcanti and Matt Oehrlein cooked up the idea of “MegaBots,” which is exactly what it sounds like.
The action was streamed live on Twitch earlier this week and after three rounds of action, Team USA's Eagle Prime was able to defeat Japan's Kuratas. The pace was probably not as fast and furious as you were hoping (blame Runaway for high expectations), but keep in mind this is the first battle in the history of giant robot fights, which to be fair, is like a week old. In five years these things could be transforming into limousines to drive the winner home.
That said, I’m not opposed to hiring Iron Glory to terrorize that asshole who lives down the block and likes to play his electric guitar at 3am from the second floor patio.
How about it MegaBots? MurderBot for hire?
