While Ronda Rousey has yet to officially announce her retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA), many believe “Rowdy’s” time competing inside the cage is done for good after suffering a knockout loss to Amanda Nunes back at UFC 207 nearly a year ago (video).
The loss was the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Bantamweight champion’s second in a row, losing to Holly Holm a year prior.
Still, there are plenty of opportunities for Rousey should she choose to retire from the fight game, as WWE has shown a lot of interest in the former champion, which seems to be mutual. Before she leaves MMA behind, there is one fight that could bring her back to the sport that made her famous.
And it isn’t a rematch against neither Nunes or Holm to avenge a loss, according to current UFC Welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley.
“Gina Carano, maybe. I think that’s the only other person with a big enough name to make her come back and fight. It’s not a fighter that, like Amanda Nunes that has been wrecking everybody, or like some of these up-and-coming fighters,” Woodley explained to TMZ Sports.
“ She (Ronda) is such a big household name, she has to fight somebody that is going to match her stature.”
At the end of the day, though, Woodley says Ronda simply moving on to WWE to start a new career their seems to be the smartest move to make, as she no longer has anything to prove in the MMA world.
“She can’t do both, she should not do both. I never want to retire somebody, but I think she’s done enough in the sport of mixed martial arts, and if she wanted to walk away, this might not be a bad time to pull up to a different avenue to open a new chapter in your life,” he said.
As for Carano, she’s made it perfectly clear that she doesn’t ever plan on coming back to MMA with her preference to stick to the acting game since competing in her last fight against Cris Cyborg way back in 2009.
That said, UFC’s pockets are deep, so maybe they can put together a package tempting enough for both Carano and Rousey to return to MMA for one more fight. Plus, there was a time where Ronda was willing to bend over backwards for a fight against Carano.
