Meryl Streep takes aim at MMA during Golden Globe acceptance speech, prompting Bellator invitation

USA TODAY NETWORK

The 74th edition of the Golden Globes Awards unraveled last night (Sun., Jan. 8, 2017) and offered an unexpected stone throw at the foundation of mixed martial arts (MMA). During her acceptance speech after winning the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, actress Meryl Streep, locked and loaded, went after President-Elect Donald Trump, football, and our beloved MMA. Check out her speech below:

"Who are we, and what is Hollywood anyway? It's just a bunch of people from other places," proclaimed Streep during her acceptance speech. " ... So, Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out, we'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts."

Not an art? Has she every seen Cody Garbrandt dance around the Octagon? Has she ever heard Conor McGregor's incredible acting job in this new commercial? In all seriousness, the sport is largely beyond the point of being considered barbaric or simply cagefighting. It has evolved into a beautiful artistry of movement, force and human will. Streep's comments did not go over so well with some of MMA's finest, prompting Bellator MMA president Scott Coker to issue the following invitation for Streep to come to an upcoming event:

It's highly unlikely that Streep will attend Bellator 170 and take up her invaluable time watching something that isn't a fine art, but maybe she should gain some knowledge on the sport before opening up her mouth in front of 20 million viewers.
