UFC on FOX 23 results: Biggest winners, loser from ‘Shevchenko vs Pena’ last night in Denver

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Cerrone vs Masvidal Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back at it again, as the world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) organization staged UFC on FOX 23 last night (Sat., Jan. 28, 2017) live from inside Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on FOX.

In the main event of the evening, Valentina Shevchenko proved that she’s more than a striker by submitting Julianna Pena in round two with a slick armbar (see it again here).

In the co-headlining act, Jorge Masvidal pulled out the biggest win of his career by upsetting Donald Cerrone in front of his hometown crowd, knocking out "Cowboy" in round number two of their welterweight scrap (video highlights here).

Biggest Winner: Jorge Masvidal

Picking the top winner was tough, as their were a bevy of upsets in the main card. But, "Gamebred’s" upset win over Cerrone is pretty impressive, seeing as how Donald looked unstoppable since moving up to welterweight, reeling off four straight victories. Plus, finishing Cerrone is no easy task, so that’s another huge feather in Jorge’s cap. Above all else, the win over Cerrone is the marquee victory Masvidal needed to take him to the next level, as far as stardom and competition goes. Expect Jorge to make a huge leap in the rankings come next week, and expect him to get an even higher-ranked opponent for his next outing. Big things are coming for the man who made his name bare-knuckle brawling on the man streets of Miami.

Runner (s) Up: Valentina Shevchenko and Francis Ngannou

Shevchenko earned herself her first-ever UFC title fight against a person she knows all too-well, Amanda Nunes, after taking out No. 2 ranked contender Julianna Pena via submission. She never talked the talk, but she definitely walked the walk once the cage door closed behind her. Now, she has the chances to get revenge on "The Lioness" on the grandest stage of them all.

Ngannou picked up his ninth win in a row, but knocking out a longtime veteran like Arlovski was the biggest win of them all. Granted, Andrei isn’t the the "Pitbull" of old, but he still carries name value. And what we saw was the young up-and-comer making a statement against a grizzled vet; a changing of the guard, so to speak. Everybody, company president Dana White included, seem to be all in on Ngannou, and with good reason.

Biggest Loser: Julianna Pena

After all the talk, all the threats and all her attempts to become the the female version of Conor McGregor by taking aim at her entire division, Pena came up flat in the biggest fight of her mixed martial arts (MMA) career. While "Venezuelan Vixen" did a good job stifling Shevchenko’s striking buy keeping her close at all times in he clinch game, what she didn’t account for, though, was her jiu-jitsu, as Valentina proved she’s a well-rounded fighter by channeling her inner-Ronda Rousey, who was also a victim of Pena’s verbal fire. It’s back to the drawing board for Julianna.
