Welterweight contenders Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal met in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 23 tonight (Sat., Jan. 28, 2017) inside Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
Masvidal was roundly booed by the crowd, which was firmly behind Colorado’s native son, “Cowboy” Cerrone.
There was no glove touch. Cerrone opened with a leg kick. He threw a body kick, then landed a jab. They exchange, and Cerrone ended it with a body kick. Masvidal landed a jab. He lands a nice one-two, but Cerrone countered with the same combination. Cerrone tagged Masvidal with a jab. The high level of striking on display was very evident. They traded jabs. Cerrone shot, and nearly got Masvidal down before Gamebred sprawled out. Masvidal attempted a spinning backfist, and Cerrone went to the lead leg high kick that ended Matt Brown. Cerrone landed a nice right hand, then Masvidal found a home for two of his own. He dropped Cerrone badly on a counter to a body kick, and Cowboy looked out of it, but the buzzer saved him as Masvidal began raining down wrath.
In the second round, Cerrone — after an urgent pep talk from cornerman Greg Jackson — tried to move and keep his distance, but he was clearly still rattled. Masvidal was turning up the heat, catching Cowboy with another gorgeous counter that dropped him. As Cerrone got back to his feet in a shell, Masvidal began teeing off to the body, compelling referee Herb Dean to step in and stop the match. It was an incredible finish for Masvidal, who earned himself a signature win in Cerrone’s backyard.
Masvidal told the still-booing crowd to save their breath, proclaiming himself a real fighter — “if you like watching people kick ass, tune in.” He then told Dana White he’s got $200,000 that says White can’t find someone who can beat him.
Official result: Jorge Masvidal def. Donald Cerrone via technical knockout at 1:00 of round two
