Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone put his four-fight welterweight win streak on the line tonight (Sat., Jan. 28, 2017) at UFC on FOX 23 live on FOX from inside Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, when he took on Jorge Masvidal in the co-main event. Cerrone had been an offensive juggernaut since moving up to 170 pounds last year, while Masvidal came into the bout riding a recent TKO win over veteran Jake Ellenberger.
As the better pure boxer, Masvidal was able to land straight jabs and timely combinations throughout the first round, while “Cowboy” landed vicious leg kicks. Masvidal tagged Cerrone to end the first frame, but the bell helped him survive. In the second round, “Gamebred” unloaded on Cerrone and knocked him down once again. After Cerrone regained his footing, Masvidal blasted him with hooks to the body along the cage before referee Herb Dean stepped in for the TKO stoppage.

With this win, Masvidal moves into position to make a run at the welterweight top 5 in 2017. Cerrone is easily one of the toughest fighters to finish in the game today, especially considering Masvidal hurt him to the head before he attacked the body, so it was quite the performance for “Gamebred.” If Masvidal can continue to turn the heat up and shed the conservative label he acquired as a UFC lightweight he may truly rise to the top of the pack over his next few outings.
