One of the biggest Bellator MMA cards of 2017 just got another huge addition, as the promotion announced during tonight's (Fri., Jan. 27, 2017) Bellator 171 broadcast that Josh Thomson will make his return to the cage opposite Patricky Freire at Bellator 172 on Feb. 18 live on Spike TV from SAP Center in San Jose, California. That event, which also touts a Cheick Kongo vs. Oli Thompson heavyweight bout, will be headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Mitrione.
Thomson, 38, has compiled a 2-0 promotional record since coming over from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2015. However, injuries have derailed Thomson's return to action since defeating Pablo Villaseca back in December 2015. Even at his age, "The Punk" still represents one of the more talented fighters on the Bellator roster. If he can stay healthy, there's no reason why he can't contend for the 155-pound title in 2017.
Freire, 31, is coming off a knockout loss to current lightweight champion Michael Chandler back at Bellator 157. The promotional mainstay has been a staple in the 155-pound division for nearly six years and will look to knock off a well-known contender in Thomson in order to leap back into title contention.
