Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, no matter how much success he has at 205 pounds, will be slapped with an asterisk by the mixed martial arts (MMA) community for winning the division title without defeating Jon Jones.
At the same time, you can’t blame “DC” for not trying. The pair were expected to rematch at UFC 200; however, Jones blew up his pre-fight drug test (because of this) and was pulled from their pay-per-view (PPV) title fight.
That won’t stop Cormier from trying to fight his longtime nemesis when his suspension expires next summer. In fact, it’s a fight the Olympian wants to badly, he’d be willing to face a juiced-up version of Jones.
From his appearance on The Herd (transcribed by FOX Sports):
“I’d fight him. If that was the case before, then the guy that I’m fighting next time is not going to be the same guy I saw the first time because of USADA and the drug testing that we are under now. But you know what, Colin, yes I would fight him. It doesn’t matter. I have to get the competitor in me and my belief in my coaches and my skill — I have to get that back. My life and career would not be okay if I had to walk away and not share the Octagon with that man again.”
First step? Convince this guy.
With Jones on the sidelines, Cormier was expected to rematch Anthony Johnson for the 205-pound title at UFC 206 back in December. Then came a pesky knee injury that put their do-over on ice, though “Rumble” doesn’t mind waiting.
There seems to be a lot of that going around these days.
