UFC Fight Night 103 results: Yair Rodriguez destroys BJ Penn, knocks out MMA legend

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Rodriguez vs Caceres-Weigh Ins Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The main event of UFC Fight Night 103: "Rodriguez vs. Penn," which took place inside Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Ariz., live on FOX Sports 1, featured the return of the legend, BJ Penn, against rising Featherweight star, Mexico’s own Yair Rodriguez.

Penn was serious walking into the cage to his traditional Hawaiian walkout song. Yair walked out to a Mexican ballad, looking confident. They touched gloves, then skipped back to their corners.

Rodriguez opened with a body kick. Penn caught a spinning back kick attempt and pressed Yair against the cage. Rodriguez broke away. Penn landed a hook and blocked a flying switch kick. Yair looked the much more energetic fighter early. Penn tied up, then landed a head kick that stumbled Penn. BJ circled away, then ate a spinning hook kick. Yair was all over him, landing spinning kicks and knees in the clinch. Penn was not able to get this into boxing range, then eats a 360 degree roundhouse and a front switch kick to the head in quick succession. Yair pressed forward with wild punches, then returned to ferocious kicks to the arms, body and legs. Yair landed a wild overhand as the round ends.

Penn looked tired answering the bell for the second round. “El Pantera” landed a front-kick-to-punch combination that dropped BJ! He swarmed, looking for the finish. BJ doggedly tried to hang in the fight, but took too much punishment for the referee’s liking, who stepped in. Yair Rodriguez got the biggest win of his career, looking absolutely dominant over a lost BJ Penn.

Final result: Rodriguez def. Penn via technical knockout at 0:24 of round two
