UFC Fight Night 103 results: Next matches to make for ‘Rodriguez vs Penn’ main card winners

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Rodriguez vs Penn Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back at it again, as the world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) organization staged UFC Fight Night 103 last night (Sun., Jan. 15, 2017) live from inside Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, on FOX Sports 1.

In the main event of the evening, Yair Rodriguez ruined B.J. Penn’s comeback attempt by absolutely obliterating the former two-division champion via second round technical knockout after brutalizing him for five minutes (highlights).

In the co-headlining act, Joe Lauzon edged out Marcin Held to claim a split-decision victory, though "J-Lau" himself felt Marcin should’ve gotten the nod after three rounds of action (see scorecards here).

Winner: Yair Rodriguez

Who He Should Fight Next: Cub Swanson

Rodriguez picked up the biggest win of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, name-wise, against B.J. Penn. While many may give him a bit less credit due to the fact that "Baby J’s" best days are obviously behind him, Yair’s entertaining performance shouldn’t be completely dismissed. He’s a young and exciting prospect that has a well-rounded game to give anyone at featherweight fits. That said, a matchup against a wily veteran like Cub would be an interesting fight, as Swanson is currently riding a three-fight win streak, resurrecting his career after back-to-back losses in 2015. The two may have shared some mat time while training at Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA, so they’re very familiar with one another.

Winner: Joe Lauzon

Who He Should Fight Next: Bobby Green

Alternating wins and losses hasn’t been good for Lauzon’s career, as his hopes for a title shot are pretty non-existent at this point of his career, sadly. That said, he still puts on exciting fights when he steps into the cage, and pitting him against Bobby Green — who is 0-2 in his last two outings — could be the recipe for another bonus-winning performance for "J-Lau." Both like to crack, and the matchup wouldn’t disappoint the eyes. Book it.

Winner: Ben Saunders

Who He Should Fight Next: Jake Ellenberger

The matchup may not make a whole lot of sense to some, but I dig it. Jake is barely hanging on to a top 15 ranking and after his loss to Jorge Masvidal, he has now dropped three of four. Saunders, meanwhile, is on a two-fight win streak and will be looking for a bigger bump in competition and name value for his next outing. "Juggernaut" fits the bill.

Winner: Sergio Pettis

Who He Should Fight Next: Ray Borg

Pettis is starting to pick up steam, racking up three straight wins including his dominant victory over John Moraga in Phoenix, which he won via unanimous decision. The flyweight division desperately needs stars and contenders, and Sergio could be in line to take a huge step to fill that void with a few more wins under his belt. A bout against Borg — who has won four of his last five — would prove competitive for "The Phenom," and will give us an insight as to where exactly Pettis stacks up against top 10 foes. There is no need to push him too fast, so this fight makes sense.
