Conor McGregor's coach not impressed with UFC 209 interim title fight, throws social media shade

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

In light of Conor McGregor sitting on the sidelines to welcome his first child into the world of combat craziness, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will meet for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209 on Mar. 4 in order to keep the division moving. After learning of the recent championship announcement, McGregor's head coach, the infamous John Kavanagh, responded via social media with a rather comical meme.

This is an immediate point and shoot situation if I've ever seen one. While it's difficult to diminish Nurmagomedov's undefeated record (24-0) and Ferguson's nine-fight win streak at 155 pounds, Kavanagh does it with one simple tweet. It may not be a smart marketing move considering McGregor will have to fight the winner of this fight down the line in 2017, but the Irish play caller doesn't seem to care.

McGregor has yet to respond to the interim title fight, but we're to assume he shares the same lack of excitement. Regardless, Nurmagomedov and Ferguson are two of the more complete contenders in the lightweight division and will surely test McGregor's resolve when the time comes.
