Will the real Renan Barao stand up? After suffering back-to-back losses to T.J. Dillashaw and then Jeremy Stephens, Barao turned in an impressive performance tonight (Sept. 24, 2016) in UFC Fight Night 95's co-main event in his home country, defeating Phillipe Nover via unanimous decision in Brasilia, Brazil.
In what was primarily a stand up affair, both men showed crisp striking early on, though it was clear Barao had the better striking power and combinations. Nover, though, didn't back down one bit, willing to go blow-for-blow against the former Bantamweight champion.
In the end, the Octagon-side judges gave Barao the unanimous decision win, putting an end to his two-fight skid. Despite coming up short, suffering his second consecutive loss in the process, Nover can take pride in the fact that he stayed in the pocket with one of the best strikers in mixed martial arts (MMA) and gave him all he can handle for 15 minutes.
The bout was Barao's second at Featherweight since making the jump up in weight earlier this year, losing his first to he aforementioned Stephens. Nevertheless, it seems the former pound-for-pound great will stick around at 145 pounds for the foreseeable future.
