Roan Carneiro (21-10) defeated Kenny Robertson (15-5) via split decision at UFC Fight Night 94 earlier tonight (Sept. 17, 2016) inside State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Two of the judges scored the bout in favor of Carneiro with scores of 29-28 and 30-27, while Robertson earned a 29-28 score in his favor.
There wasn't a ton of action in this one, but Carneiro, 38, did just enough to earn the decision.
Both fighters wound up in the clinch early on in the opening round and from there Carneiro pulled Robertson down to the canvas for a takedown. Robertson was able to get back to his feet, but the Brazilian pushed him up against the fence once more. They returned to the middle of the Octagon and the fight was a stand up battle for the remainder of the round. Carneiro held the edge there using his jab along with landing a pair of heavy body kicks.
In the second, Robertson began to walk down Carneiro, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt landed a solid right straight before taking him down for the second time in the fight. Robertson reversed position with a well-timed sweep and took control of the fight inside of Carneiro's half guard. In the last minute, Carneiro swept Roberson and then deftly transitioned into full mount where he landed some short punches, but nothing of significance.
Carneiro landed a single-leg takedown to start the third, but Robertson immediately popped back up to his feet. Carneiro landed a flush left hook, which briefly dazed Robertson, but instead of attacking he went in on an unsuccessful takedown attempt. Robertson continued to come forward and landed a couple of low kicks. Carneiro picked his spots and landed a few more jabs until the fight came to an end.
Carneiro improves to 4-4 in UFC, 2-1 since returning in Feb. 2015. Robertson falls to 4-5 in UFC in defeat.
