Bellator had some big news leading up to its Bellator 161: "Kongo vs. Johnson" event tonight (Fri., Sept. 16, 2016) at H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas. "American Gangster" Chael Sonnen signed a contract to fight for Bellator MMA. Sonnen also had some big news during Bellator's conference call to promote his signing, revealing that the penalties for any drug test failure as a Bellator fighter would be harsh.

"Scott [Coker] had said earlier that he didn't really want to talk about the contract so, I'm hesitant to offer this, but allow me to anyway," he said. "If I was to fail a test under my Bellator contract, it will cost me 100 percent of my purse, and $500,000. That is in writing. Now, I understand for you guys that's not as good as a clean test, but boy that's gotta mean something. If you think I didn't read that part of it before I signed it, I did."

Sonnen was asked if that part of the contract was drawn up and targeted specifically at him given his track record.

"I have no idea," he said. "I don't know if that was unique to me or if that was boilerplate that everybody's got -- I don't know. But, I saw that. That's before you deal with your commission issues and everything else. It was right off the top -- full purse, $500 grand. That's just to Bellator. That's before we start dealing with commissions. I don't know if they set that aside for me, but I'm on the other side of the tracks now."

Sonnen says when fans get one look at his physique, they'll be impressed at how well he does testing clean.

"You wouldn't believe it if you saw (me)!" he exclaimed. "I've still got the biggest arms in the business."

Does this mean Bellator is hiring a drug testing lab to check up on its fighters like Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and its partnership with United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA)? ESPN's Brett Okamoto offer this insight.

Sounds like a relief ... for now.
