UFC 203 results: Jessica Andrade strangles Joanne Calderwood into submission

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Top 10-ranked women's Strawweight contenders, Jessica Andrade (No. 6) and Joanne Calderwood (No. 7), kicked off UFC 203's pay-per-view (PPV) main card action tonight (Sept. 10, 2016) inside Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Both women are former Bantamweight competitors who were looking for the second straight 115-pound victories since dropping down a weight class.

And it was Andrade who continued to roll, dominating Calderwood for four full minutes before locking in a fight-ending guillotine choke at the end of the first round.

Andrade got the action started early with a hard left cross, which she followed with several gut shots. As soon as she had Calderwood loosened up, she scored a takedown along the fence. Calderwood worked hard to get back to her feet, but Andrade slammed her back down to the canvas, landing in side control. She eventually transitioned to half-guard as Calderwood angled for a triangle choke. Andrade, though, power bombed her way out and worked some ground-and-pound from the top position. With about one minute remaining in the first frame, Andrade postured up and drilled Calderwood with several hard short shots. Calderwood attempted to get back to her feet, but she was way too careless. Andrade immediately recognized that her neck was unprotected. She slapped on a quick guillotine choke, dropped to the floor, locked up her legs and squeezed until Calderwood tapped before she napped.

Andrade looked like a beast -- very strong and dominant. And, perhaps, a serious threat to the Strawweight crown in the very near future.
