Holly Holm undergoes surgery for shattered thumb following loss at UFC on FOX 20

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Talk about a rough night.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm lost her second straight fight after getting outworked and outpointed by top 135-pound contender Valentina Shevchenko at the UFC on FOX 20 event last month in Chicago, Illinois.

And now she has a shattered thumb to go with it.

"She had eight pins inserted into her hand," Manager Lenny Fresquez told ESPN.com. "We'd still like to fight by the end of the year. As far as an opponent, we'll have to see who comes up. Whoever she fights, Holly needs to take care of business."

"Overrated," according to this fighter.

Holm slipped to No. 4 in the division rankings (see them here), but maintained her place among the top female fighters by generating big numbers at the box office. Where she goes from here remains to be seen, but the title -- and Ronda Rousey -- are currently out of reach.

For now.
