The always potent Carlos Condit looked to utilize his elite striking arsenal to subdue the crafty submission game of Demian Maia earlier tonight (Sat., Aug. 27, 2016) in the main event at UFC on FOX 21 from Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was Condit's first Octagon appearance since losing a controversial title fight to Robbie Lawler back at UFC 195 this past January.

A fast moving Condit circled around the Brazilian to begin the first round, changing his stance and feeling out the grappling expert. On the first takedown attempt, Maia drove Condit to the ground and moved into side control. From there, Condit attempted to get back to his feet, but Maia took his back and immediately threatened with a rear naked choke. White Condit is one of the more savvy submission defenders in the sport today, Maia is simply too good. The Brazilian sunk in the choke and made "The Natural Born Killer" tap just minutes into the fight.

This is a crushing defeat for Condit who considered retirement following his loss to Lawler earlier this year. There wasn't really much he could do after Maia took him down and gained optimal positioning. The Brazilian didn't even land many punches before working in the choke. Just goes to show you how prolific Maia truly is on the ground, even against a guy in Condit who hasn't been submitted since 2006.

With this victory, Maia absolutely deserves a title shot. But with Georges St-Pierre nearing a return, Stephen Thompson deserving his own chance to hoist UFC gold and Nick Diaz waiting in the helm, the Brazilian may still have to do some lobbying to get what he wants. Still, this is one of his most impressive victories of his career.
