It is on like Donkey Kong!
Mixed martial arts (MMA) legend and former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight and Welterweight champion B.J. Penn is eyeing a return to the Octagon opposite standout Featherweight Ricardo Lamas at UFC Fight Night 97 live from the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philipines on Oct. 15 (h/t MMA Fighting). The 145-pound bout would serve as the main event.
Penn, 37, was scheduled to fight Dennis Siver, then Cole Miller, at UFC 197 this past April, but "The Prodigy" was suspended six months by United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for an out-of-competition IV use dating back to March 25. If this bout with Lamas is finalized, it will mark Penn's first walk to the Octagon since losing to Frankie Edgar via fourth-round TKO back at TUF 19 Finale in 2014.
Remember, Penn announced he was returning to competitive MMA just earlier this year.
As for Lamas, this would be a prime opportunity to use Penn's massive notoriety around the sport to harness more popularity, prove his divisional status and acquire a feather in his cap that few fighters have earned. Lamas is coming off a disappointing loss to Max Holloway at UFC 199, but he's been a perennial title challenger for the past two years solid.
