UFC on FOX 20 results: Fight Pass 'Prelims' live recap, updates

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Before former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women's Bantamweight champion Holly Holm looks to rebound later tonight (Sat., July 23, 2016) against striking sensation Valentina Shevchenko, and former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez makes his return to the Octagon opposite Edson Barboza, at UFC on FOX 20 live from United Center in Chicago, Illinois, a portion of the event's "Prelims" undercard will take place on Fight Pass starting at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Find out what happened right here as the Fight Pass preliminary recaps roll in live:

Alex Oliveira vs James Moontasri

In one of the more enticing matchups of the night, Oliveira (15-3-1) attempted to utilize his long frame to take out Moontasri (9-4) in a Welterweight showdown. After a few lackluster exchanges against the cage to begin the first round, "Cowboy" accidentally kneed Moontasri below the belt and sent him to the canvas. Both doctors tended to "Moonwalker" as the fight looked like it was going to be stopped. However, Moontasri gathered his marbles and the action continued, as Oliveira relied on even more knees to the body. In Round 2, Oliveira pressured Moontasri against the cage, softened him up with more knees inside, dirty boxing, and secured a crucial takedown, which the Brazilian used to score some crushing ground-and-pound. It was much of the same in Round 3, seeing as Oliveira was able to gain top control, press his weight down on Moontasri, score points in bunches and essentially lock up the unanimous decision win. Oliveira's performance wasn't quite as exciting as previous Octagon appearances, but it was an intelligent gameplan to say the least.

Jim Alers vs Jason Knight

Rising Featherweight prospect Alers (13-3) tried to right the ship tonight against Alan Belcher's protege, Knight (17-2). As two of the better submission finishers in the division, Knight unexpectedly set the tone early with a lead jab and oblique kicks until Alers cut him on the right cheek and secured a late takedown. But it was Knight who ended Round 1 with his own takedown before talking a little smack to "The Beast." Knight continued to push the action to begin the second frame, forcing Alers against the cage with forward movement, landing countless strikes and talking even more junk on the feet. Despite landing some timely takedowns in Round 3, Alers was unable to ward off the offense of Knight, both standing and off his back. In the end, Knight would do enough to earn the split-decision win and capture his first Octagon victory.

Luis Henrique vs Dmitrii Smoliakov

In a battle between powerful Heavyweight prospects, Henrique (9-2) attempted to hand Smoliakov (8-1) his first professional loss in his Octagon debut. It didn't take long for Smoliakov to tire after defending countless takedowns and superior striking by the 22-year-old Brazilian. After gaining back control in Round 2, Henrique softened the Russian up with ground-and-pound before securing the rear naked choke finish. It was the longest fight of Smoliakov's career and a victory that puts Henrique on the map within one of the shallowest divisions around.
