Stephen Thompson is ready for a shot at UFC gold.
Last night (Sat., June 18, 2016), at UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, "Wonderboy" earned his seventh straight victory, this time defeating former No. 1 contender Rory MacDonald via unanimous decision.
While the fight certainly wasn't as dazzling as his lightning quick finish of former champ Johny Hendricks, or his wheel kick knockout against Jake Ellenberger, Thompson fought a brilliant fight and neutralized a truly excellent fighter.
Check out the highlights here.
The performance really showcased just how far Thompson has come in his MMA career.
When Thompson joined the UFC roster, he was a decorated kick boxer and karate fighter with clear holes in his grappling and wrestling game.
Just four years later, "Wonderboy" has developed into one of the more unique and well rounded mixed martial artists in the world, and is proving to be an incredibly difficult puzzle to solve inside the Octagon.
MacDonald has made a career out of pressuring fighters and getting his opponents out of their comfort zone, but "Red King" struggled to find openings on the feet, and Thompson's take down defense was as strong as ever.
It was a chess match, and Thompson won it in a landslide.
"Wonderboy's" seven straight winning streak following a difficult loss at the hands of Matt Brown back in 2012 is nothing short of sensational.
Nah-Shon Burrell, Chris Clements, Robert Whittaker, Patrick Cote, Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks, and Rory MacDonald all fell victim to "Wonderboy" during his incredible stretch.
With Robbie Lawler fighting Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 next month, you can expect "Wonderboy" to be fighting the winner for UFC gold later on in 2016.
Will the fight take place in Madison Square Garden?
