Though he didn't come out looking like Franken-Rory -- much like he did after his memorable fight against Robbie Lawler last year -- Rory MacDonald suffered some bumps and bruises during his Welterweight showdown against Stephen Thompson at UFC Fight Night 89, which took place last night (Sat., June 18, 2016) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Among them was a broken nose, an injury he suffered in the fifth and final round according to "Red King's" comments during the post-fight press conference.
And with it being just the latest break he's suffered on his nose, Rory says he is unsure what to do next to correct the issue.
Which is why he may look at the possibility of getting surgery since simply taking time off to heal didn't do much.
"In the fifth round during a trade. We were both trading a little bit. I don't know what it was, I was just trying to throw combinations and tuck my head," said MacDonald. "But, something landed and I felt the waterfall start; the familiar feeling."
Moving forward, MacDonald may look at going under the knife to correct an ongoing problem.
"I don't know. I broke it a couple of times actually before this fight. I have no idea what to do," he said. "I gave it time. It kept breaking."
"I don't know if surgery is going to be the best route. I really just have to take time, and look into surgery and see if that can make it stronger, because just time off didn't do shit."
His fight against "Wonderboy" -- which he ultimately lost via unanimous decision -- was the last one on his current UFC contract.
Going into free agency, MacDonald doesn't have the leverage he had hoped for following the crushing defeat. Which means he can't expect Dana White and Co. to be rolling out the red carpet and the big paychecks at the negotiation table.
If that's the case, Scott Coker at Bellator MMA could potentially offer "Red King" a viable option. For now, Rory is more worried about taking care of his busted beak before he starts contemplating his next business move.
